Monday March 30, 2015 Halle, Germany

Hallo Family! (and friends, if I have friends that read this that aren’t on missions yet!) Well...this week was eventful! CRAZY things happened really! The Lord is really working everywhere, and on everybody! Sorry about the short letter last week, we were at the internet laden and the keyboard sucked. Plus it was not a good day for me. I haven’t missed home or my family like that in a long time! 1. Dad, how did you have 15 companions?! Are you counting exchanges or something?! 2. We haven’t seen the Women’s General Meeting yet, and I don’t know if I will be able to! But...if you want you could send me some of the talks that I could read for personal study! (That would actually be fantastic if you could do that for me!) 3. I`m so happy for Eliza! Tell her Herzlichen Glückwunsch for me! (congrats) 4. I loved loved loved seeing all the pictures of everyone! Everyone looks great! And old...(just the kids of course)! Crazy how only five months makes a huge difference!

My week...

Montag: We did emails. Then we were supposed to meet with David and Joni for a joint teach lesson, however, David had a Wohnung Termin (apartment date?) he had to go to, so... yeah. We ate lunch with Joni and she is kind of unofficially the manager for this band and it’s pretty cool to hear her stories and all her connections! Actually, if I had a better camera here I could have taken their pictures for flyers and stuff for service. However, my camera is a missionary camera, so I didn`t get to do that! But, I did get to meet the photographer with Joni one day a week or two ago! Then we had FHE! It’s fun! But not very many people come! So…I`m only going to tell you this story if you don’t freak out about it. Because it’s in the past! So, coming home we got off our tram at our stop and like normal a few drunk people got off with us. Usually they go and do their own thing. We crossed the street at the cross walk and were walking to our apartment building when 3 drunk guys crossed the street and started talking to us. We were at our door already, so I was trying to unlock the door quickly, however it was dark and I had the wrong key, so I switched and by that time they were right by us saying not very nice things. Luckily I got the door open, we went in and shut it quickly. Then we had to go upstairs into our actual apartment. As soon as we went inside we could hear them kicking the door, so we ran up the stairs (with no light) and went into our actual apartment. As we were doing so, we heard them break into our apartment building. We went into our apartment, scared to death, didn`t turn on the light and called the Elders. Nothing happened after that really, except for that they didn`t leave our building for another 45 minutes. SO many things could have gone more wrong in that situation! I probably didn`t explain it very well, but I honestly don’t think I’ve been so scared in my entire life! However, all is good! And I pray that we will be safe coming home every night since then!

Dienstag:  We met with David, and he gave us cake and made us bracelets! There’s a picture I will send of that! He’s cool! We also went finding for forever! When we were done for the day, a girl walking with her bike came around the corner (Who walks with their bike?) we talked to her, expecting her to hop on her bike and turn us down! However, she was actually interested! We set up an appointment and she said that it was interesting because she was riding her bike until just like a minute before, and she didn`t really know why she got off, but she did! (I know why she got off;) So we finally, after 5 weeks found a new investigator!! Yes! I made a language study plan, and hopefully that will help me a little bit! I hate teaching myself!

Mittwoch: We had our last district meeting of the transfer! Sad! We also met with David again and taught him a little about conference, prophets, and the book of Mormon. It’s really hard to teach when we don’t have a joint teach! It was also so warm and sunny this day!

Donnerstag: We had a mission wide conference call! That was fun! We talked about the Weil Er Lebt church website and stuff! If you haven’t seen the “Because He Lives” video, go watch it! It’s very good, and we use cards about it for finding a lot! Also, we got the news that we will be getting Ipads in the next couple of months! Crazy! And I don’t know how I feel about technology...or being a Facebook missionary! We will see. We met with Sister Schröter, read in the Book of Mormon, and shard the visiting teaching message in the Liahona. David had his baptism interview. He isn't quite ready for baptism yet! But it’s ok! Because one day he will be! He is very African and has some problems with committing to live the commandments, Even though he lives them anyway. We also met with Enrico. He is so sweet and always has very deep questions that we love answering.

Freitag: Weekly planning for our last week of the transfer! Crazy! We met with David again and watched Finding Faith in Christ video! (In French of course) We then had Deutsch class and English class!

Samstag: It was a little bit of a rough day...companion study was a little rough, just with communication of ideas and stuff. We also had 2 appointments fall out, so that made it even worse. Plus David wasn`t getting baptized, and one of Sis. Egbert’s investigators in Osnabrück was getting baptized, so she was a little sad. But, we did have a good member appointment with the Wutzlers! Plus, we found out there IS a daylight savings time in Germany and it was that night! So that’s good we went there!

Sonntag: Time change...our cellphone (alarm also) isn't very smart and doesn’t change on its own. So we ended up waking up an hour late! Ugh! But we made it to church on time! David wasn’t there! Schade! We went to sister Bunks house to eat! We had Potatoes, and meatballs with sauce. Typisch (typical) Deutsch food! We had our appointment with our new investigator fall through because it was bad weather and she didn’t want to meet in the park anymore. We went to the church and did companion study. I broke down in tears...It’s been a little bit of a different companionship. We don’t work together as well as I would like. However, when I started crying it broke the ice (surprise there) I told her how I was really feeling. She told me how she was really feeling. It’s now better. Man I wish I would have broken down in tears or had the courage to say something 4 weeks ago! Really, I`m here to testify that if you don’t get along with someone, pray for them, serve them, and TALK through your problems. It works, I promise!

Well...this next week is conference week, we have tausch (exchanges), its Easter, we have like 3 eating appointments, zone training meeting, and also transfer calls. At the sisters conference President randomly looked at me and said "Enjoy your next few weeks in Halle."  However, when after I asked him if he was serious he said, "Well, the last few weeks of the transfer that is." So...who knows! I kind of feel like I’m leaving! Sad! This week is going to be busy and stressful! Wish me luck! I love you guys! Have a great Easter! It’s one of my favorites! Also, don’t forget to take an Easter picture by our door! And look at the Because He Lives video!

Monday March 23, 2015 Halle, Germany

Hallo Family! I really don’t think you know how grateful I am that I get to read your emails every week! Thanks for being so detailed! I do have one thing, will you send me a picture of the bracket every week? I would still like to be informed on who is winning. And If Duke loses that would be awesome too. And mom, I didn't forget about your birthday! As of today there is something in the mail for you! Hadlie...DO NOT break my phone please. Who knows if I’m going to have to use it when I get back! Colt..Sorry you didn't get a new phone. I would be mad too.

As for my week...
Montag: Went to the doctor for Sister Egbert. I hope I never have to go to the doctor here. It is worse than America.

Dienstag: We stopped by the soup kitchen to sign up for another day, because even though the nun is mean, we need to do service. We did it, this time without the nun even saying anything to us! We also taught David and Enrico. Enrico decided that our German is good enough now that he doesn't have to speak English with us. So that has been different with him!
Mittwoch: We got to go to Berlin for a personally much needed sisters meeting! I got to see a couple people from the MTC and Sister Lisonbee! It was really good and I love President and Sister Kosak!

Donnerstag: We had distrikt meeting and I got your Easter package! Thank you so much! Thank Grandma Bonnie also! She sent and a cute Valentine’s day package. Sis. Egbert was grateful for all the stuff in there for her too! Thanks! We also taught Trang! She is so cute and I love teaching her piano!
Freitag: We did weekly planning, focused a lot on David’s baptism that is this NEXT week!! I hope everything works out! We also had a relief society activity that was really fun! Crafts!

Samstag: We met with David again! Joni was there to, to help translate! We taught tithing and he has some pretty cool stories about helping other people!
Sonntag: Church! Then we ate as a ward and I made cookies. Amazingly, they turned out even though I had to substitute for brown sugar and vanilla! We also met with Lydia! I love her! She just broke up with her boyfriend of 2 and a half years! Poor girl! But she is still so great!

Well, not much time! Sorry! And my keyboard is broken, so sorry for all of the missing e’s and r’s. I really do love you and pray for you always! Keep David in mind! He is supposed to be baptized on Saturday! Love you!
Alles Liebe, Sister St. John

Monday March 16, 2015 Halle, Germany

Well Familie, Hallo! I really love reading your emails! Thanks for being so detailed! 1. River mentioned that you will be going to San Diego for spring break again? Is this a Tradition? If so... just remember when I get home next year! ;) Na ja, (ha yes) that will be fun! 2. Mom, I already had the pictures of the pills and stuff because you asked me for them the last week. I wish I could say I was inspired or something, but I just did what you told me to do. I email from the church or the Internet laden place. But my companion’s don’t seem to like the Internet place. They would rather spend FOUR HOURS in the church. So we are here...for 4 hours every p day. 3. English Flyers. Yep, we teach an English class, but like 3 three people come and they already know how to speak English which is good because I can speak English, I just don't know how to teach it! 4. Dad, There is a difference between what we do on p-day and what I would like to do on p-day. We do lebensmittle (?) shopping. Cleaning. Emails. That’s about it. If I had a little more of a say in it we would go to a different museum every week, (however they aren’t open on Mondays anyway so we would have to switch hours) or work out/play a sport. I’m DYING to do something physical! Or take a nap at home! Just SOMETHING!! Maybe one day I will have a companion that wants to do that stuff too! 5. Dad, thanks for making your letters funny. It’s not very often I get jokes like yours here in the mission field. I used to get them a lot, but now that Elder Silver is transferred I don't get them quite as often! 6. Mom, thanks for the pictures, and you are looking great! Really, I wouldn't say that if I didn't mean it!

Die Woche (the week)....

Montag: We taught David and had a joint teach with Bruder Mitte who went on his mission to France so he helped us out! (Also, I hate that every country has a different name in every language. Deutschland, Germany. Why is it not the same?) David still has a lot to learn and apply before he can get baptized and he keeps telling us that he wants to be baptized in about a month or 2. We will see.

Dienstag: We had one or two appointments that fell out. BIG surprise there! Just kidding...that’s a bad attitude! I did have faith that they would work out! I just don't have very good luck I guess. We did meet with Enrico and he has some pretty good, deep questions that are fun to answer!

Mittwoch: We had another appointment fall out...schade (what a shame)! But, we met with David again and showed him the restoration video in French! He liked it and now finally believes that Joseph Smith is a Prophet! We then had Seminar and Chor (choir). It’s pretty much the missionaries and a couple other people in the chor and our chor teacher thinks I have a good voice, but that I need to be louder, and not so airy! So she likes to work with me and my vocal chords hurt every time we leave!

Donnerstag: This day we had 7 hours of finding! Sister Egberts first time of finding for that long in like 3 Transfers! But we did good and switched it up! We did a different "topic" or "way" of finding each hour! Genealogy Cards, normal Cards, English Flyers, Umfrage (survey), Easter, and Book of Mormon! The last person we talked to was SO cool! We talked for a half an hour and he asked about all of the good stuff! Why we are here on the earth, how we pray, why we were on a mission, how we know God is there. Oh! All the good stuff! I hope we run into him again soon! (He didn't want to meet with us, but did take a book of Mormon) We also taught David the Word of Wisdom! He is awesome and read all the stuff and he told us they were all bad and that he wants to be healthy so he doesn't do them. He likes his boxing! Yes!

Freitag: We did weekly planning (You know how I feel about it already). We then met with Lydia! She is awesome! Not afraid to ask questions or anything! My favorite thing she said when we were meeting was that growing up and studying the bible she felt like something was missing. That there was more. She has read/heard of the book of Mormon from past missionaries and she said she liked it because it made sense. Why would God stop revealing things to his children? We also jumped on modern day prophets and General Conference with that one! She really likes the idea (It’s not just an idea, it’s the truth) of a modern day Prophet to lead us on the earth today. We then had Deutsch Class and English Class.

Samstag: The Groitsch (however you spell it...It’s a small town where other elders in our Distrikt serve) elders had a baptism and we brought David! The only problem was that when we all (there were about 8 missionaries trying to catch this bahn) ran to the bahn, the doors shut on me and David and so we didn't make it. Yep...just me and David! My companion was on the bahn, but not me. Really...the 2nd rule I thought I would never break...I broke! Please laugh at me, because it is just my luck! Also, I didn't have the cell phone! But David did! So that was good! But yeah...so Sister Egbert came back and we waited a good 20 minutes until the next one came! We missed the actual Baptism, but we got to show David the Baptismal font. He liked it and like being with all the people there. Oh! And Guess what?! I met a man named Enrico that served with Brad Allen in Austria! (is that what is in English?) He was really cool and I took a picture with him!

Sontag: Church. It was hard to pay attention yesterday. Too many things on my mind! We met with David and Joni right after church and really wanted to know if David felt like he would be ready or even wanted to be baptized on the 28th. To our great surprise he said he knew that’s when he needs to be baptized. So…we have A LOT of work to do! But we will do it! He is great! We then ate at the Riedels! They have five kids 6 and under! 2 sets of twins and only one Girl! It’s always fun! And, we had TACOS!! Oh so good! They are so sweet! Also, Sister Degraw, a sister that served here about a year ago came back and went by on Comfort with us! She is super sweet and it’s weird because she has a normal life now and can wear pants. PS. She is also dating someone from this mission. We hear about people ALL the time who have gotten married to each other from this mission. President gives us an update on all the people that get married! Funny!

Well, today we had to go to Leipzig for a doctor’s appointment for sister Egbert! She has a sinus infection! So we didn't do very much today besides eat at McDonalds and email! Love you tons!

Liebe, Sister St. John

Monday March 9, 2015 Halle, Germany

Hallo Familie! I really love being updated with everything that you are doing! You do a very good job at keeping me updated, thanks! So, I only have a couple questions...they are both for dad. Dad, how do you roll your R's?! They do that here and I get made fun of by all the other missionaries because I can’t do it! That sounds worse than it really is. People just like to tease me. Anyways...second question...Banana Bread! Can I have the recipe please? Danke!
For this past week...

Montag: Emailing by the Internet Laden was weird! And lame because we couldn't send pictures at that one. Then we went shopping! I got a skirt and a dress at Orsay! They are really cute and you will see pics of them later I’m sure. We also then had a great family home evening where Corola invited a ton of people and her niece talked to us about her study abroad in Malaysia! Cool!
Dienstag: We had an appointment with a contact named Anthony. But it fell out. So, we decided to go by on one of our investigators Lotte. She was home and invited us in! We talked for a long time and did some How To Begin Teaching, (Refer to PMG (Preach My Gospel) chapter 10 I believe) and she talked a lot about how she feels weird praying because she feels there is no one there. We had a good conversation about how God is there and how he answers and hears prayers. We then met with Schwester Schröter! This is the less active that hasn't been to church in 7 years, has anxiety and all that stuff. She is SO nice though. She loves the sisters and has such a strong testimony. Reads the Book of Mormon every day! She is more faithful than some active members in our ward!

Mittwoch: We had ZTM in Leipzig! I love that city! We go almost every week! I learned a lot about having the right attitude about the language. Mom will know this, but usually with things that are hard I usually have an "I'm never going to be able to do this attitude" and then mom would reply by saying..."Well with that attitude you're sure not!" So, at ZTM I kind of got that answer. With an "I can’t do it" attitude, I'm never going to be able to do it! So, from this day on, I have had a different attitude and I believe it’s working!
Donerstag: Comfort called us and she needed our help to get her from Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) to her house. So we went and picked her up and were going to take a Bahn, however, she made us get in a Taxi, yes I say made because she pretty much pushed us in! Oh she is a funny lady! We didn't die in the taxi and so all is good! We also met with David and had a joint teach with Joni who speaks French!! It went SO good! It was the law of chastity and he said he has no problem with it because he has no girl! So good David! He said he loved the lesson because he could actually tell his feelings and have someone understand! Poor kid! But! We are meeting with him 3 times a week now because we have to make a LOT of progress before his baptism in 3 weeks. Pray for us, and him! We also met with Enrico and talked to him about Patriarchal blessings. I love talking about those because I have such a strong testimony of them! My patriarchal blessing has helped me in my life so much.

Freitag: Weekly planning as always. We had 2 appointments set up and they both fell out. But! We did see David on our way back from going to one of them. He was doing well and we talked for a little bit! He's really funny, and will be a great member! We then had Deutsch and English! BTW if anyone has Idioms (that’s an English thing) would you send them to me? Dad, I'm sure you have some! The people that come to our English class want some!
Samstag: We went finding and gave out English class flyers. Then we met with Trang and I taught her some piano, then we talked about the word of wisdom. Ok, then my FAVORITE part of this week! A girl called us on Wednesday and said she had contact with some missionaries 2 years ago in Germany while she was studying, but then moved back to London and had no contact there. She ended up moving back to Germany and working in Wittenberg, and living in Halle! She was still in contact with the missionaries that had taught her before even though they were home now! So, one of the missionaries gave her our number! Guess who the Missionary was?! Brudder Liddle! My MTC teacher!! So, we met with Lydia at a Cafe called "Bewaffel Dich" It reminds me of Awful Waffle!  (Savannah should know what that is!) She is super cute and has the cutest accent! We set up another appointment and really we can’t wait to meet with her! I LOVE when we have new investigators!

Sontag: Chruch! Always good! David and Maria (investigator also) were both there! Along with a family of 4, that a member brought!! They are now the Elders Investigators! Ah! Miracles are happening! We ate by the Müllers with the Jentztch famile! We then tried to go by on a less active and her 8 year old son. Someone let us into the building (the klingels (?) are weird on that building) so we rang their doorbell inside, but no one answered. So, I thought a lady lived next door that we had also met so I rang their doorbell. It wasn’t the lady who answered, but a guy about 25 and he recognized us as missionaries and invited us in. He had met with missionaries before and found what we believe really interesting. Except for he found it interesting in the fact that he is studying theology and so it was all about school stuff and yeah. The point of this is that one of his roommates came out and it was one of the Knights we talked to that was fighting in the park that one time!! I was SO excited and so he came and talked to us too! He will become a member sometime! We are preparing the Knight (Sabastian is his name) step by step!

Well, that’s about it for my week! We have a goal to have at least 1 appointment every day! We have been doing it! It’s so so good! Loving every minute of missionary work! Remember to always have an "I CAN do it" attitude!
Alle Leibe,

Sister St. John
P.S. I may or may not be shaving my legs today for the first time since I’ve been in Germany! I may, or may not send a picture next week! You will die!

I wore Sister Egbert out our first day! She wasn't used to walking so much! Whoops!
 Some flowers! Its becoming spring!!

Some missionaries in Leipzig! We ate at KFC and it was the best KFC I've ever in my entire life ever had! (ps. I'm getting less photogenic as my mission goes on!)
Comfort, yes we are sitting on her floor!
Sister Egbert! So suß (?)! And a cool bridge!
Us finding one day! We like to trade clothes because we are almost the same height!
Us on Hallmarkt! See! She's only like one inch taller than me!

Monday March 1, 2015 Halle, Germany

Nothing changes, if nothing changes!

Hallo Family! Sounds like a pretty normal week, except for the eating at Red Lobster part..I now have a craving for some of the biscuits! If you could send me some that would be great! Ha! Just kidding! However..you probably have sent me the Easter package already..but sometimes on Sundays I crave "Sunday Chocolates" (Reese’s PB cups) and I know that’s possible so maybe if you could send that, it would be great! Also, Mom, I'm turning into you! I LOVE peanut butter! I eat it on a piece of toast almost every day! The only difference is that my bread is probably better than yours! Also, chocolate is really good! (I’ve been limiting myself) And! I found some actual sour gummy things here! They are very good! Plus...Sister Lisonbee used to whistle without even knowing it and it would drive me crazy! Just like when Colten whistles and you have to tell him to stop! Also, I have the bad foot genes where I have like 5 cracks in each of my feet! It’s a combination of hard water, wearing tights all day every day, and walking I-don’t-even-want-to-know-how-far, every day (Sister missionary life)! Thanks for the recipes! They will help! I thought it was funny that you sent me how to make hashbrowns and mashed potatoes! I'm not totally incompetent! I did watch you guys make stuff! Ha! No, but really, thanks so much! I hope I don't put too much stress on you with everything that I ask for!
As for my week....
Montag: Last day with Sister Lisonbee! I cried...a lot this day! But we did play scum for FHE and I beat Elder Silver, (no matter what he says, I did) so that made me a little more happy!
Dienstag: TRANSFER DAY!! We made our way to Leipzig Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) at about 8 in the morning and then we sent Sister Lisonbee on her way to Cottbus. (I didn't cry that time). Then I hung out with Elder Silver and Elder Gerlach until the Zone Leaders came and then I just hung out with 4 elders for another little while. It was SO weird! I felt kind of really weird...I'm going to be SO weird when I get home! Anyway...Sister Warner and Sister Jensen (they serve in Leipzig) finally came! We sent Sister Jensen to somewhere up by the ocean (jealous a little bit) then I got to spend the day with Sister Warner and her new companion Sister Murdock in Leipzig! Leipzig is huge and I'm so glad I don’t serve there. I would get lost for sure! Then Sister Egbert came! She is from Nevada, by Reno. She is adopted, and about 1 or 2 inches taller than me. She has brown hair, and big brown eyes (People here always comment on them because everyone here has blue eyes. I fit in well with all the 14 year olds here actually!) And dad...I believe she got a 21 on her ACT (yes, I did slip that into a conversation, you are welcome). She studied for a year at BYU before she came here. She also trained a Deutscher (German) that came into the field the same time as me! And guess what that means...? Her Deutsch is REALLY good! President actually told her in interviews that she was going to need her good German the next place she serves. So yep! She is put with me!

Mittwoch: We did our studies. I felt self-conscious about my German all day. We gave out a Buch Mormon the first person we talked to! David canceled our appointment because he had Deutsch Schul (school). However...I learned and spoke more German this day than I have my whole life! 9 bis (to) 9 is kicking in with me starting now! Speaking Deutsch from 9 in the morning to 9 at night is kind of a struggle when you CAN’T SAY WHAT YOU WANT! That’s my problem! However, I’m not going to improve if I don’t change (hence the title of the email)!!
Donerstag: Sister Egbert came from an area where they had 2 or 3 appointments every day! Well...welcome to Halle where we have maybe three a week! However...nothing changes if nothing changes! We had 3 appointments set up this day! One with Trang, Frau Hellwig (she wasn’t home) and then with David. We reviewed the first lesson again because he didn't know who Joseph Smith was! Also, we dropped off another Book of Mormon to a girl that we talked to in Peißnitz! And Miracle! We found her house ok.
Freitag: We had district meeting and we got to meet our new missionaries! We have Elder Harris who has been out for about 7 months I think! Then Elder Fisher, He's our New-B! My German has come a long way since the MTC! We then got Sister Egbert anmelded (registered I think) and then we called some contacts on our phone because I had no idea who they were! We called about 7 and only 5 picked up and we got 4 new appointments! MIRACLE! We called one, Chanita, she picked up, we introduced ourselves, she remembered us and told us it was funny we were calling because she was having a really hard time right now and she was just thinking about it she should pray and come to church! Ah! Ja klar (Sure)!! We were SO excited! The Lords timing is perfect! We set up an appointment with her for the next day.
Samstag: We served at the Soup Kitchen...the Nun was there...honestly out of everyone I have ever talked with, who would’ve thought the meanest person would be the Nun at the Soup Kitchen! She is the typical German nun! We may never serve there again. We will see. We then went to Chanitas house...but she wasn’t there! She called us and said she was drunk last night, and just woke up and has a hangover so it would be best to meet some other time. We then did some weekly planning and there was a big soccer tournament here I guess and they made a huge deal out of it and had a parade with all the players and police and stuff down our street! So that was cool to watch! The police here are scary.
Sontag: Church, David forgot to mention to us that he would be in Hamburg for a boxing tournament that he was in...so he wasn't at church! We then ate by the Rehn family and Sister Egbert got to be introduced to Klösse (dumplings)! We also did some tür (door) to tür that day!

Jetzt (now) I’m emailing at an internet laden (shop) because usually we were at the church for 4 hours because there is only one computer! Sister Lisonbee thinks the internet ladens are creepy so we never went. They are ok! But this one doesn't have any way to send pics! :(So I will have to send some next week!
The Lord is really preparing his people! He's been preparing them for all their lives! I know I’m here in Halle for a reason! It may be just to plant some seeds! But if that’s the only reason, then it’s worth it! Thanks for all your prayers and support! I love you so much! Keep doing what you are supposed to in order to invite and keep the spirit with you and in your homes! I know that when you do, you will have a happiness, and not just any happiness, but pure eternal happiness!

Alle Liebe (all love),

Sister St. John
